“Available Light” Book Free Give-Away!

I am giving away a free copy of an excellent book about photographing in natural light, Available Light: Photographic Techniques for Using Existing Light Sources by Don Marr!!  Read on to see how to take part in the give-away.

CONTEST CLOSED!  The contest ended Nov. 8, 2010.  I will go to Random.org and have it select and announce the winner tonight (Nov. 9).

I recently came across this book and found it incredibly helpful.  Unlike most photo books that merely tell you about front lighting or side lighting or diffused overcast lighting and then don’t go into much practical detail, this book actually explains how to seek out, modify, and use natural light – in all its forms – to take better photos.  It demonstrates that off-camera flash is not necessary for better photos, even in less-than-ideal lighting situations.  I wrote much more about this book in my Essential Digital Photography Books post.

This book can be yours! The free copy of Available Light by Don Marr, donated by Amherst Media, photographed on my floor in the available window light.

I liked the book so much that I contacted the publisher, Amherst Media, and asked them for a copy that I could give away on my blog here.  They enthusiastically agreed, and I have just received the book from them.

Great Info. Look forward to more helpful updates in the future.

  8. I’m currently in the market for a new DSLR camera and have found your reviews and tips extraordinarily helpful in making my decision! I’d love the available light book to help me improve my photography (hopefully with my new camera) :)

  9. Great site, i found you in google looking for a comparison between the 7d and the 60d, but I have to tell you that this site is much, much, much more than that. Congrats.

  10. So glad i came across your blog. I am in the process of buying a new camera and your comparison of the canon 50d and 60d was really helpful. Found you on google. If you visit my web site I took all of the photos on it. I am an amateur that LOVES photography and am excited about getting a better camera. I want to get into hdr – how exciting is that!

  11. Your article on deciding between 550D/60D/7D was really useful, though i have yet not finalized my dSLR, but it was useful and well guided

  12. I found your blog when I entered “books for intermediate dslr photographers” into a Google search. How fun to have found it! I’ll be back to check in from time to time. Keep up the great work. I have my fingers crossed about the possibility of winning your book.

  13. I bumped into this website 3 hours ago and have been here ever since! Having worked as a photojournalist specializing in documenting poverty in America in the 1960s/70s I was entranced by Doug’s images for NGOs. Beautifully executed up-close looks at Real People in Real Life the world over! Having just reentered the world of photography after a many year absence I’d about given up on finding a photographer currently utilizing the real power of the camera rather than using it to create Graphic Art masquerading as Photography. All those who have always wanted to be an “Artist” but who lack the manual dexterity to pull it off now need do is purchase a copy of Photoshop, a camera, and some other gear and they are all set! But to my mind anyways the images they produce are so highly manipulated and UnReal as to be totally sidestep the camera’s real power. Doug’s work, on the other hand, brings to mind that of the great photojournalists like W Eugene Smith, Bruce Davidson, David Douglas Duncan…

In short this website makes me feel hope that photography as a true art form is still alive and well….

    Thanks Doug!

    1. Thanks for your very kind comments! My goal on this blog (and in my photography) is to focus on “the real power of the camera,” aspect of photography, as you say. Lately I’ve gotten sidetracked with talking about new equipment and reaching out to people about my new eBooks – an exciting new venture for me – but I do intend to get back to discussing photography.

Thanks for the compliments, but I’m hardly up there with the greats! But I keep working at it. Have a look at the so-called humanitarian photographers and their work. Perhaps that is the kind of work you are looking for. Ami Vitale is wonderful, as are many of those who were interviewed at this blog: http://www.hebervega.com/
