Nikon D750 Experience book manual guide how to set up use learn dummies field master tips tricks recommend setting

2014-10-28 – Version 1.0 – Originally published on Full Stop, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and Apple iTunes.

2014-12-18 – Correction (correction made in Amazon v1.0a) – The caption in Figure 228 has reversed which number is the user-set ISO and which is the Auto ISO setting determined by the camera. It should read:

Figure 228 – Manual Shooting Mode and Auto ISO – The user has set the exposure settings at 1/60 shutter speed, f/4 aperture, and 6400 ISO. However, there would be too much light for a proper exposure at these settings and the image would be overexposed, so the camera has used Auto ISO to decrease the ISO setting to 4000, and the Exposure Indicator Scale remains at 0.

2015-03-16 – Correction – minor typo, shown in blue:

Figure 9 caption should read “…miniature Mini Cooper toy viewed…” not “Mini Copper”.

2015-11-30 – Unpublished addition – Firmware Update 1.10:

Nikon has released D750 Firmware Update 1.10. It includes numerous bug fixes to various menus and functions, as well as adds the following feature:

“An External recording control option has been added to the HDMI item in the SETUP MENU. If the camera is connected via HDMI to a third-party recorder that supports the Atomos Open Protocol (the Atomos SHOGUN, NINJA2, or NINJA BLADE), selecting On allows camera controls to be used to start and stop recording. More information is available in a supplementary manual. Note: Choose an option other than 576p (progressive) or 480p (progressive) for HDMI > Output resolution in the SETUP MENU.”

You can learn more, and download the new firmware at the Nikon website: http://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/index.html

2018-02-02 – Version 1.2 (called version 1.1 for MOBI/Kindle edition) – Text updated to incorporate the two typos/corrections above. PDF, EPUB, and MOBI corrected. Correction to come soon to Apple and Nook versions.

  1. I am a long time Nikon user and I have been enjoying your book.
I believe that you have the set and auto-chosen ISOs backwards in the Fig 228 caption.

    1. Hello, I’m glad you are enjoying the book. Thank you for pointing out the error – I recall that I tested to verify which was which, but I failed to correct it in that caption!

  2. This guide is a MUST for anyone who owns or is considering buying the D750.Thank you so much for your wisdom!!

  3. I purchased your book for the Nikon D750. Is has proved to be very useful. However, I have one question. Should I be able to see the focus points in the viewfinder one the camera is turned on? I only see the number of focus points when the focus button is depressed. When the focus point is set to d51 I can see small dots that outline the points of the entire focus area.

    Thanks for you reply

    1. Hello, I am glad that you have found the guide to be helpful! You should typically see a single, active AF Point in the Viewfinder, not all the points, when using Single Point AF. When you are using Group AF, you can use Custom Setting a4 to choose how that group of points is shown. And when using the Dynamic Area modes, you can also use Custom Setting a4 to determine if you see only the single point that you can move, or if you see that active point plus dots indicating the perimeter of the Dynamic Area. So if you are using d51, then you should see the single active AF Point that you move around, and the dots surrounding the entire area, as you mention, since that is the perimeter of all the 51 points of the Dynamic Area. If you use Dynamic Area d9, then you will see the active point and the dots immediately surrounding the active point, as only 9 points are active. Hope this helps!

  4. Thanks for the explaination. I have another question.I notice that in the aAutofocus that a4Foucs point illumination and a5AF point illumination is shown. However, on my D750, it is listed as a4Focus point display and a5 Focus point illumination. Is there an explaination. i.e is my camera a grey market and hence the difference?.

Thanks for you attention to my question.

    1. Hello, I am not sure why your menu names are different. Perhaps they changed the names slightly during one of the firmware updates. I don’t have a D750 with me at the moment to confirm this, so perhaps you can ask this questions on the D750 forum at DPReview.

  5. I bought this book some time ago and have been looking through it with more attention. In many cases I have noticed that you provide aperture and iso information but do not indicate the lens used. This would be helpful and could be updated with any revision you consider. Thank you.

  6. I am finding that I would rather have a physical copy rather than an ebook. is there any way for me to upgrade to a physical book?

    Thank you,
    Lisa Gagnon

    1. Hello, I currently only offer e-books. However, you can print out the PDF version (or bring to a copy shop for printing.) Let me know if you need the PDF version.

    2. What’s the difference between your suggested
      SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB up to 95MB/s UHS-I/U3 SDXC Flash Memory Card – SDSDXPA-128G-G46 @ $73.80
      and the
      SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I Card (SDSDXXG-128G-GN4IN) @$58.42

      1. Hello, They appear to be almost the same card, however, the second one you list ($58.95) is shown as the most current version, and the most current Amazon listing. So I would suggesting purchasing that one. I will try to update my links for the most current version.

  7. Thanks for your reply Doug, I am impressed that you still reply to purchasers given the range of your publications. I have been using the Nikon 28-300mm with my D750 lately and am taking it as my travel lens on a trip soon. I also have the Tamron 24-70mm which I found better value than the Nikon equivalent lens and started using the D750 with this lens when I purchased it. I also have a 70-200mm 2.8 VR which I have always wished for since starting with a D70, it is my secret weapon and aside from macro am happy with this lineup. I have progressed through many Nikon bodies FE, D70, D200, D300, and now D750. I think the D750 the best all round camera I have ever owned. This is why I was interested in seeing images with camera settings and lens information. Cheers from OZ
