My Gear
The photos seen in the various posts of this blog were shot with:
Canon dSLR Bodies
Canon EOS 7D
Canon 50D and Canon 60D (the current mid-level model)
Canon 5D and Canon 5D Mk II
Canon Rebel XT and Canon Rebel T3i (the current entry level model)
plus images taken with the Nikon D7000 and Nikon D5100
No, I don’t own all these cameras! Some were rented from Calumet in Cambridge, Mass., and some provided courtesy of Newtonville Camera in Newton, Mass. Note that local dealers like Newtonville Camera often have the latest hot, new cameras in stock weeks before the box stores, plus passionate photographers and dedicated sales staff to assist you, and the great customer service you would expect from a family operated Main Street store (even though they are located on Walnut Street).
If you plan to purchase a a camera, lens, or any other equipment soon, please have a look at the PURCHASING section further down on this page.
See this post to compare the latest line-up of Canon dSLR Cameras and this post for the Nikon dSLR cameras.
My Lenses
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM – my everyday walk-around lens until I got the 24-70mm, great for portraits, details, close-ups, making use of depth of field and spatial compression.
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM – wide angle for environmental shots, events, spatial expansion.
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM – perhaps the best all-purpose walk-around lens for everyday and travel use. (A similar but lighter weight and less expensive option to this is the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, which has the advantage of Image Stabilization.)
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM – great for portraits, working in closely with a subject or in low light without a flash, and for beautifully creamy backgrounds at f/1.4 and 1.8.
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM – (I borrowed this one from Newtonville) incredible for super close macro shots and dramatically shallow depth of field, also good for portraits.
You can learn much more about lenses in the Lenses category of posts.
Flash
